When your young child is learning how to write their name small pencils are not the best option to start with. Their small hands lack the fine motor control to manipulate the tiny pencil. Fat pencils, markers and the fat crayons are good for helping them grip and have better control. One medium I love to use is bingo dobbers. They are fun for the kids and work similar to markers, but many have a lip on them to help keep their fingers in place.
Name Writing With Bingo Dobbers
Bingo Dobbers (you can buy them cheap at the dollar store)
Paper and Pencil
Write your child’s name on a piece of paper with a pen or pencil – make it big (like fill the whole page). Have your child trace over the letters with the bingo dobbers. Have them go over it with multiple colors. You could also have them trace other things: shapes, lines, numbers.
